Cantor Josh Finkel

Cantor Josh sang “Oseh Shalom” into his wife’s tummy every single day as his first child, Sophia, grew inside. When she was born, Cantor sang it to welcome her, and she immediately stopped crying, opened her eyes for the first time and looked right in his eyes. Josh has been passionate about Jewish for kids ever since- developing Early Childhood curriculaes, pastoring his young congregants, and creating family singalongs.

Cantor Josh is the spiritual leader of Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was ordained Cantor at HUC-JIR’s School of Sacred Music in 2014 after five years of rigorous study and training.

Though he has distinguished himself with a number of honors as a clergy-person, musician and songwriter- having been named one of the Jewish Daily Forward’s “New Jewish Voices” in Jewish music for his original song “Jerusalem”- he feels the most important part what he does is his work with children.

In addition to Sophia, who is now 7, Cantor Josh is the proud daddy of Jakob Finkel, who will soon turn 5.
